Creating Independent Coping Strategies for Anxiety

Lynne Mitchell, MSW

Thursday, May 11th, 2017 at 7:00 PM

Does your child have a hard time coping with anxiety in an appropriate and effective way? Do they respond to anxiety with anger? Withdrawal? Sadness?

Everyone gets anxious. Our children will continue to confront situations that make them anxious. No one can offer your child an anxiety free life. That cannot be the goal. This workshop will help parents understand the ways most of us cope with anxiety. It will also explain the ways in which your children cope with anxiety that are not effective. Finally, it will help parents gain insight into how to teach your children more effective ways of coping with anxiety.

Maintaining Balance, Self-Identity, and Relationships as the Parent of the Special Needs Child

Kate J. Stone, Psy. D, Clinical Psychologist

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017 at 7:00 PM

As the parent of a child with significant special needs, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to care for an extraordinary child and, at the same time, stay even-keeled, continue to do things that are important for your own mental/physical/spiritual health and well-being, and have enough space at the end of the day for other relationships - relationships with your other children, relationships with your guy/girlfriends, even the relationship with your spouse. And as a clinical psychologist, I know just how important it is to maintain balance, self-identity, and relationships as the parent of any child, let alone a child with special needs. This workshop will delve into some of the real issues with which parents of special needs children struggle, and it will strive to provide real strategies for managing these struggles one day at a time.

Kate J. Stone, Psy.D is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Natick, MA. She has a varied background in psychotherapy in both the outpatient and clinical setting, and her degrees were earned from Boston College and William James College. Her professional focus centers around the health and treatment of caregivers of children with special needs, panic and anxiety disorders, chronic procrastination and avoidance, pregnancy and infertility, and struggles with loss of self-identity. Dr. Stone is also a mother of two girls, one with significant special needs.

Managing Children\\\'s Behaviors: Before They Happen, When They Happen, After They Happen

Eric Pegnam, LICSW

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 at 7:00 PM

Managing difficult behaviors means knowing what to do when a problem occurs but it also means knowing what to do before problem behaviors happen in order to avoid them or minimize their impact and how to process the behavior after it occurs in order to decrease and eliminate it in the future.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to recognize behavior patterns that lead to more serious acting out behaviors such as oppositionality, aggression, destruction of property, and extended tantrums and how to use that knowledge to help your child. We’ll talk about how to keep calm and focused during a crisis and the best way to de-escalate your child when he’s in one. Finally we’ll talk about how to use critical incident as a teaching opportunity so that your child can learn ways of dealing with overwhelming feelings that are safe and effective.

Eric Pegnam, LICSW is a licensed social worker with 15 years of experience working with children who have moderate to severe behavior issues. Mr. Pegnam is trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and has a certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders from Antioch New Hampshire.

Mr. Pegnam is a clinical supervisor at The Walker Home and School in Needham, Ma where he co-developed Stepping Stones, Walker’s program for Children on the Autistic Spectrum who have significant behavior issues.

Movie Night: "Monica and David"

Monday, February 25th, 2013 at 7:00 PM

Movie Night: "Monica and David" - "Monica and David" is not just for those families affected by Down Syndrome. With themes appropriate for any family with children with different abilities, the movie explores the marriage of two adults with Down syndrome and the family who strives to support their needs. Monica and David are blissfully in love and want what other adults have-an independent life. Full of humor, romance and everyday family drama, the film uses intimate fly-on-the wall footage to reveal the complexity of their story. While Monica and David are capable beyond expectations, their parents, aware of mainstream rejection of adults with intellectual disabilities, have trouble letting go. If there is interest, we will discuss the film and the bonus feature: "Employment in the Community". To learn more visit http://www.monicaanddavid.com/about/synopsis/
